Description

Teach definition and ordering of rational numbers (integers, fractions, and decimals), as well as absolute value, graphing integers, and reflection of and distance between ordered pairs on coordinate planes.

These grade 6 Math lessons were created as a response to how overwhelming GoMath! curriculum can be for our students (and us!). We designed complimentary lessons that get straight to the key concepts present in each lesson of the chapter. However, this does NOT have to be used in conjunction with GoMath! curriculum and does not require any knowledge of GoMath! curriculum. These lessons are simply a stand-alone blueprint for teaching 6th grade math standards.

This listing includes the following resources:

  • Anticipation Guide (ready-to-print) based on lesson objectives that students fill out before and after the chapter so they can set goals and visually keep track of their learning
  • Ready-to-print PDF cover pages for the whole chapter and each lesson (with Essential Questions included!), as well as editable file versions
  • 3 word problems for each lesson
  • Ready-to-print PDFs of each lesson
  • Editable files of each lesson (to customize the names of your students and teachers!)
  • Examples of Math Journal notes for each lesson
  • Ready-to-print AND editable chapter tests (two versions to allow for a reteach in between if desired) with grading rubric
  • Answer Keys for all lesson problems and tests

Here is the alignment between each lesson we created and GoMath!:

  • Lesson 1 > Grade 6 Lesson 3.1
  • Lessons 2-3 > Grade 6 Lessons 3.2-3.4
  • Lesson 4 > Grade 6 Lesson 3.5-3.6
  • Lesson 5 > Grade 6 Lesson 3.7, 3.10
  • Lesson 6 > Grade 6 Lesson 3.8, 3.10
  • Lesson 7 > Grade 6 Lesson 3.9, 3.10

Please look for our FREE complimentary resource "Unpacking Word Problems" that outlines the process for annotating word problems, as well as our 3 word problem teaching sequence.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, credits/debits, positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.
Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
Recognize opposite signs of numbers as indicating locations on opposite sides of 0 on the number line; recognize that the opposite of the opposite of a number is the number itself, e.g., -(-3) = 3, and that 0 is its own opposite.
