Description

Are you a middle school math teacher trying to show your students the real-world applications of solving equations? Or are you a middle school science teacher trying to show your students the significance of math in understanding the physics of the world? Either way - this worksheet is for you!

In this activity, students will conduct a density exploration lab using pumpkins (or another gourd or vegetable). Students will make predictions, solve for density using a formula, graphing relationships, and making conclusions. Students will also apply and connect their knowledge of solving for missing variables in the density formula. Overall, students will have an opportunity to think critically about the objects around them and how they can use math to better understand them. This worksheet is 3-pages, with an answer key and teachers notes page included.

Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations.
NGSSMS-PS1-2
Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred. Examples of reactions could include burning sugar or steel wool, fat reacting with sodium hydroxide, and mixing zinc with hydrogen chloride. Assessment is limited to analysis of the following properties: density, melting point, boiling point, solubility, flammability, and odor.
