Description

This is lesson 2 unit 1 of math modeling- lines of best fit and trends. This file contains Word and PDF versions of the all-inclusive lesson plan and student notes pages. The standard this lesson is covering is Alabama Math Modeling Standards 15 and 16. Lessons to follow this will be posted soon.

Learning Targets covered include":

I can identify linear vs. nonlinear associations in scatter plots.

Identify and describe positive associations in scatter plots, whereas x increases, then y tends to increase as well.

Identify and describe negative associations in scatter plots, whereas x increases, then y tends to decrease.

Identify and explain the significance of outliers and clusters in scatter plots.

Understand that a line can be drawn through a set of data in a scatter plot to represent a linear trend in the data.

Understand that a best fit line does not go through all or specific data points but rather is as close to as many data points as possible in a scatter plot; there is not one unique line that best fits a data set.

Draw a line through a data set to best represent a trend in the data.

Use a best fit line to make predictions about the data.

This lesson is based on an 85 min block schedule. So if using for 45 min classes can split this lesson in to two days.
