Description

Computational fluency is essential for a strong math foundation as this allows students to quickly build upon their skills and focus on problem solving rather than recalling facts from memory. Many students struggle to memorize facts and research has shown that memorization is not the best strategy for building fact fluency. Providing students with strategies that support a strong number sense help build fluency and flexibility with numbers. If students are given tools to support them when a sum is unknown, they develop a greater understanding of numbers.

Research has also found that using flash cards to build fluency is counterproductive as it focuses on memorization without understanding and adds a time restraint. Using games that are engaging and provide supports for understanding allow students multiple opportunities to build their computational fluency while having fun.
