Description

Transform your students’ approach to math word problems with this collaborative, critical thinking resource designed especially for 6th Grade! Based on the proven Stick-It-Together strategy, this low-prep activity builds problem-solving skills, encourages mathematical discussion, and supports cooperative learning—all while covering essential concepts from the math curriculum.

Students work independently to solve a series of real-world math problems, then come together in groups to compare strategies, justify answers, and agree on a final solution to “stick together.” This method emphasizes mathematical communication, conceptual understanding, and peer accountability—making it a powerful tool for formative assessment and classroom conversation.

Each page features engaging, curriculum-aligned word problems covering key math strands such as:

  • Addition and subtraction of decimals
  • Multiplication and division strategies
  • Fractions and mixed numbers
  • Volume and area
  • Graphing
  • Geometry and Measurement
  • Multi-step problem solving

This resource is ideal for back-to-school math diagnostic assessments, math centers, guided math groups, or even as a fun team-building activity during the first weeks of school. It also supports mathematical processes such as reasoning, reflecting, selecting tools and strategies, and connecting concepts across strands.

What’s Included:

  • ✅ Over 40 pages of collaborative problem-solving worksheets
  • ✅ Clear instructions for individual and group components
  • ✅ Levelled exemplars for self-assessment and reflection
  • ✅ A reproducible response template for group consensus with clear success criteria
  • ✅ Printable format for independent or partner work
  • ✅ Flexible enough for use with any math unit throughout the year

This resource supports a growth mindset approach to math by valuing multiple strategies and emphasizing the power of respectful disagreement and consensus. Your students will become more confident problem-solvers—and they’ll have fun doing it!

I give this an A++. This is completely interactive and independent at the same time. Allows students to help and motivate each other! Allows them to process their thinking and try different strategies and collaborate! I used this weekly in my class it became one of the resources that I constantly talk about because it really helped my students. Absolutely one of the best purchases I made on TPT

My students needed extra practice collaborating with each other in small groups. This helped with making sure they used key vocabulary and solved multi-step word problems. I love that they display the learning goal and tips to help them solve with the best answer.

Depending on the problem selected the students could be done with the work very quickly. It's important to teach the students how to work through the problems by following a routine.

I have adapted this format to many different grades and strands. It was a great resource to add to my toolkit as a first year teacher and it is one I come back to annually, even 10 years later.

Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Find the volume of a right rectangular prism with fractional edge lengths by packing it with unit cubes of the appropriate unit fraction edge lengths, and show that the volume is the same as would be found by multiplying the edge lengths of the prism. Apply the formulas 𝘝 = 𝘭 𝘸 𝘩 and 𝘝 = 𝘣 𝘩 to find volumes of right rectangular prisms with fractional edge lengths in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Draw polygons in the coordinate plane given coordinates for the vertices; use coordinates to find the length of a side joining points with the same first coordinate or the same second coordinate. Apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
