Description

My Theme Café is a level progression Math project that incorporates a range of math skills in a fun and engaging way. Students will be required to make decisions and apply a variety of math skills to progress through each level of the project.

30 fun levels! Plus an optional extra 30 levels added in Part 2 if you wish to extend this activity. Both Parts 1 and 2 are included in this packet.

To set up this math project, not much prep is required by you, all you need to do is print/photocopy the files (there are a lot though) and select your organization method (options described below).

The only extra resources that may be required are blank pieces of paper, calculators, and occasional but optional computer access if you want students to publish/research certain things using technology. For the most part, this is a print and go for it math project. Depending on student math level and ability, such as younger grades, some math skills in this project may require some explanation by you (however, I have tried my best to make things as straightforward as possible for you).

There are a few options with how you could use this math project resource:

1. You could go through each level as a class and provide a modeled example to guide students through each specific activity.

2. Students independently/or in pairs work at their own pace through the math project levels; allowing for differentiation. The teacher facilitates around the classroom, providing one-on-one assistance when needed.

3. This math project could also be used as an ongoing homework task. You could set a certain amount of levels per week, or allow students to work at their own pace through the levels.

Throughout the levels of this math project I have aimed to provide instructions and text guidance explicitly to help reduce the questions for you. However, some explanation on your part may be required depending on your individual student abilities and understanding.

My students enjoyed this math project, even those who aren't particularly fond of math. I truly hope your students will find this a beneficial learning experience and enjoy this too!

Teaching Duration: I haven't added a specific time you will need for this math project because it will depend on the speed of your students and how you wish to implement this resource to your teaching. However, it is a big project and plenty of time is recommended if you wish to get through all of the activities.

Met expectations
Great value
My students love just about everything from Mrs. J! We are doing the cafe after finishing the pet hotel. The kids love being able to make their own decisions and set their own prices, etc. There can be some scaffolding depending on the individual students needs but don't let that stop you! These projects build so many real world skills. One option you can do- for the first business you do the whole business as a class, making the decisions together. The next time, let the kids work in pairs or on their own for their next business.

My students thought this was so much fun and it felt like tricking them into applying their math skills. They would ask so many questions and we're excited to learn whatever was needed to take on the next part of the project.

I used this as a yearend activity. It allowed students to work at their own pace and provided opportunities for peer mentoring.

Quality of the material very good. The idea very brilliant. It's simple but complex enough for train problem solving, creative thinking, decision making, and so on. Thank you.
