Description

Help students become better thinkers with these discussion slides! This resource includes 50 word problems that can be displayed and used during mathematical discourse discussions. There are 10 word problems for each domain of the Common Core Standards for 4th grade. These word problems allow students to:

  • practice constructing arguments
  • analyze errors
  • develop math logic and reasoning
  • practice problem solving
  • promote critical thinking
  • develop higher-order thinking skills

This resource aligns with:

Standard for Mathematical Practice #3 - Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

What's included:

  • PDF of 50 word problems (one problem on each page)
  • PowerPoint version of the word problems
  • Link to Google Slides version
  • Detailed answer key with suggested/sample answers

Here are some suggestions on how to use the slides:

•Mathematical discourse discussions

•Bell ringers

•Math centers

•Math journals

Because many of these word problems are rigorous, it is highly recommended that they are done either whole-class in a discussion or discussed whole-class after students have had a chance to solve or respond to them individually. Many of the problems can have several correct responses or explanations, so it is important for students to be exposed to different perspectives to help develop their critical thinking skills.
