Description

Math Around the World is station work for students to practice a variety of different problem types. Each country represents a different type of problem the students must master in order to move onto another country. You (as the teachers) are the customs agent stamping student's passports after they solve each problem.

I set out slips of papers with math problems on them that require the students to perform a certain operation or practice a particular skill. The slips of papers surround each country's name card. Each table represents a different skill I want them to master. Students grab a problem and go back to their seats and complete the problem. They then check in their answers with me. If correct they get that country checked stamped off. If they get it wrong, then you just found someone that needs some help. Role play as a customs agent (show them were they went wrong and tell them to bring their paperwork back to customs when it's all in order. Students cannot leave the country they are in until they are stamped by the customs agent. Each student needs to make it around the world (and receive a stamp from each country).

My students enjoyed finding the different countries on my classroom map, and also practicing a high level thinking problem in math. Love the idea. Thank you!

I am always looking for ways to get the kids moving and to give them a reason for solving the problems. I'm going to give this a try!

It will definitely get them moving around the room. Sometimes changing locations around the room can really change the dynamics of the class (in this case in a positive way). I hope it works for you as well as it worked for me.
