Math Stations Activity: Expressions & Error Analysis – Grades 5–7

πŸ“Œ Grades: 5–7
πŸ“Œ Subjects: Math – Expressions, Algebraic Thinking
πŸ“Œ Perfect For: Math centers, small groups, rotations, independent practice, spiral review
πŸ“Œ Standards: CCSS 6.EE.1, 6.EE.2, 6.EE.3 – Evaluate & simplify expressions

⭐ ABOUT THIS RESOURCE

Engage your students in hands-on math practice with this 3-station activity focused on numerical and algebraic expressions!

Students rotate between three stations, choosing cards, solving problems step-by-step, and leaving their work visible for everyone. This is perfect for active learning, collaboration, and formative assessment.

Stations include:

  1. Numerical Expressions: Simplify using order of operations.
  2. Algebraic Expressions: Evaluate expressions with 2 variables, showing substitution line by line.
  3. Error Analysis: Identify and fix common mistakes in student work, reinforcing conceptual understanding.

Students glue or tape their card to the station poster and write their name, creating a visual record of learning for both students and teachers.

πŸ’‘ HOW IT WORKS - LESSON PLAN

  1. Students rotate to a station and select any task card.
  2. They glue the card to the poster.
  3. Students solve the problem line by line, clearly showing all steps:
  • Numerical Expressions: Solve with order of operations.
  • Algebraic Expressions: Show substitution with β€œwhen” values, then simplify.
  • Error Analysis: Identify the incorrect line, then rewrite the problem correctly.

On each poster/station:

  1. Students write their name next to the card.
  2. Rotate to the next station when the timer rings.
  3. After completing all stations, a gallery walk or class discussion allows students to review strategies and misconceptions.

πŸ“ WHAT’S INCLUDED

  • 5 Numerical Expression Task Cards (simplify expressions)
  • 5 Algebraic Expression Task Cards (2 variables, line-by-line solutions)
  • 6 Error Analysis Cards (identify & correct mistakes)
  • Student Directions Worksheet (step-by-step instructions)
  • Answer Keys (for all cards, line-by-line)

All materials are print-and-go, low-prep, and reusable for multiple classes.

🎯 WHY TEACHERS LOVE THIS ACTIVITY

  • Encourages active participation and student accountability
  • Makes common errors visible and teaches students how to fix them
  • Flexible: stations, partners, independent practice, or small group
  • Supports differentiation – students pick the card that matches their comfort level
  • Perfect for spiral review, test prep, or end-of-unit practice
