Description

Math talk is extremely important in third grade because it helps students develop deep understanding of mathematical concepts, not just memorize procedures.

Incorporate math talk into your daily math routines!

This is a great daily lesson opener for your grade 3 math class. Share with students the daily slide. Two of the math statements are TRUE and one is FALSE. Students should engage in turn and talks, think-pair-share, and class discussions in order to determine which statement is false and why.

This routine helps kids dig into the math and learn to communicate effectively! Plus, your YEAR of third grade math talks is planned for you! 200 different math talk activities ensures that students are engaging in number sense activities daily. The routine is quick and easy to incorporate!

Math talk is one of the most effective ways to bring the Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMPs) to life, especially in third grade. Explaining reasoning shows they understand the problem and helps them persist through challenges.

- Talking about quantities in context helps students interpret numbers and operations meaningfully.

- Students practice listening, reasoning, and defending their thinking, building a strong math community.

- Talking about models helps them connect abstract numbers to concrete representations.

- Encourages thoughtful, purposeful use of tools rather than random guessing.

- Promotes precise computation, labeling, and careful explanation.

- Helps them see shortcuts and connections, building number sense.

- Encourages flexible thinking and generalization.

So, how do you use this resource?

In our elementary classroom, I print our posters on card stock. You can definitely laminate for extra durability. I hole punch the pack of posters I plan on using for the year. I put those posters on binder rings and then hang them from command hooks on the wall. I just flip the posters each day.

Another (easier) option? Just project! Pick the slide you want to use each day and show it to the students on your board digitally!

Add these to your morning meeting, anticipatory set in your daily math lesson, as a math talk center, or for a five minute filler during the day! There are so many uses to fit your needs.

What materials should I have on hand?

Paper! You can print on card stock and laminate for durability, if you would like. I also like to hole punch the posters and hang them from command hooks so all I need to do is flip the poster daily.

Or...a computer and board to project.

*Students may need scratch paper or a whiteboard to work through some of the problems.

What's included?

- 200 math talks geared toward third grade math skills and standards.
