Description

This Piet Mondrian inspired math task can be used after teaching fractions, ratios and percent. It is meant to make kids think! This resource is leveled so all students can find success with these math concepts. The task is broken into three stages, and an answer key is provided.

The first stage uses a Piet Mondrian replica and asks students to describe each color as a fraction, decimal and percent.

The second stage gives the values and asks students to create a piece of art based on the values given.

The third stage allows students choice and asks them to create their own original Piet Mondrian inspired art piece describing their color choice as fractions, decimals and percent.

Two variations have been provided. In the first, there are a total of 204 squares, making it a little more challenging. In the second, there are 100 squares, making it a little less challenging. Choose the one that works best for your class.

Students have an opportunity to create their own Piet Mondrian inspired artwork. We have provided guiding lines to help create their masterpiece. They can use these guiding lines to make a 15 x 15 picture, or ignore them and create their own.

Students need to be able to create a fraction and then convert it to a decimal and a percent. They will also need to understand ratios. Please see our video preview for a more in-depth look. This was made with Alberta curriculum in mind, but can be used for other province's curriculum, as long as students understand the above mentioned concepts. We have also provided an American spelling option for common core.

Great for a review activity! We use this in our classroom as a fun way to prepare for PATs.

Excellent resource. My students really enjoyed it. In the 100 square picture, the answer key is inforrect in question 2 with the Red to Blue colour ratio. It should be 11:29.

This was perfect in my grade 6 class in Alberta. It was an easy way to show the connections between concepts and have students be creative. You could really tell who got it and who needed more assistance with the 2 different levels. Love it!
