Description
If your 2nd – 5th graders have a hard time solving math word problems, I have just what you need! It’s time to start teaching your students to think about the word problem instead of simply applying a formula. These strategies and STAR thinking steps will help guide your students through any math word problem. The STAR thinking steps, along with the eight problem-solving strategies included in this resource, will make your students shine!
Students will learn how to Stop, Think, Act, and Review, the 4 basic steps to solving any word problem. The STAR Thinking Sheet will guide students through the four steps as they solve word problems. The eight problem-solving strategies in this resource are the key to solving almost any word problem.
The eight problem-solving strategies are:
•Use manipulatives, beach theme
•Draw a picture, summer camp theme
•Find a pattern, surfing theme
•Make an organized list, baking theme
•Use a table or chart, BBQ theme
•Guess and check, lemonade stand theme
•Work backward, skateboard theme
•Use logical reasoning, recycling theme
I know kids need lots of practice, so you get 40 word problems (5 problems for each of the eight strategies.)
Then there are 5 problems for Choose Your Own Strategy (zoo theme). To make the problems super engaging, each set of problems has a different theme with coordinating pictures to help you keep them organized. In case you’re counting, that’s 45 word problems!
(Answer Key is included for each problem-solving strategy set of problems.)

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was a great resource for our elementary students. Our teachers are excited about using the STAR "math attack strategy." This was packet included everything to introduce it to students. I would highly recommend!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not only is this cute but also so effective. My class has really adapted this method and use it in all subjects including social emotional.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I use this to help students solve problems. From academic, such as math problems to everyday situations. They Stop, Think about a way to solve their problem. Act out the strategy used and they review to see if it solved the problem. Love the kid-friendly pictures.
