Description
Mathematical Thinking- Place Value is a systematic set of posters that allow students the language support and sentence structure to understand challenging math concepts and express their mathematical thinking through structured dialogue.
These reproducible materials:
-take minutes to make, are easy to store, and are simple to use.
-do not need monitoring for independent practice.
-are reading and speaking (oracy) centered; hence they increase English language proficiency.
-are active and involve all students.
-can be used whole class, small group, partner, rainy day recess, and family activities
-includes 2 formative assessment pages to ensure mastery
This product allows students to solve problems independently through a gradual release of responsibility. Active learning occurs with partner practice, and sentence frames vary to teach new forms for asking and answering questions about place value and reading/writing large numbers.
Mathematical Thinking- Place Value intentionally varies vocabulary and sentence structures to increase students’ English language proficiency, academic language, and content vocabulary as students practice each poster and do each activity. The English language practice is beneficial for math thinking, as well as reading, speaking and listening skills for native and second language English speakers.
This 14 page packet includes 3 Place Value poster as well as a free ELD poster -”How Much? How Many?”. This poster is designed to practice the use of much and many, the differences in their use, transformations to past and question forms, and singular and plural forms. Also included in this packet, are the instructions and materials to make "human numbers" which allow students to practice reading large numbers while they have fun. An extension of this game includes using prepositional phrases of location to continue improving English language proficiency. All activities include a gradual release of responsibility built in.
Students learn from each other. Student attention is very high because they must listen to their partner’s question or response to know when it is their turn. Parts switch with each practice so no one gets bored. By Sheet 3, students are inventing their own practice numbers and solving their own problems. They learn from each other and repeated practice.
These activities offer students who do not quickly grasp concepts to have repeated practice of one specific skill or concept at a time.
Mathematical Thinking- Place Value is one of a series of math posters designed to increase students’ core math, reading, speaking, and English sentence structure scores on state assessments that follow the CCSS, as well as English Language Proficiency assessments.

I love how you used sentence frames with this great place value lesson! Thank you.
Hey, Fun to Teach,
So glad you liked the math sentence frames. Please check out my other academic math language frames as appear on my site. They will be free for the first 10-15 days.
