About the Lessons & Tasks:
During each lesson, students will work as a class to answer a math question. During the task part of the lesson, students will work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to apply the same problem and record their thinking.
Themes:
- Lesson 1 - Flower Shop: Students are going to be "working" at a "flower shop". They get a flower order that they need to complete. The order includes the total flowers needed and the 2 colors of flowers that should be included. Students use flower counters (provided) to complete the order, creating a number combination that reaches the total sum. They then create a receipt that shows how they filled the order.
- Lesson 2 - The Strawberry Patch: Students go strawberry picking! They get a "strawberry patch" with a given number of strawberries to start. They are also given a number of strawberries that they need to collect. They collect/subtract that amount of strawberries from the patch, then determine how many strawberries are left at the patch. They'll use either the strawberry printables that are included, or your choice of math tools, and represent their work on a recording sheet with pictures and/or numbers.
- Lesson 3 - Butterfly Field: Students "catch" butterflies! They get a "butterfly field" with a given number of butterflies to start. They are also given a number of butterflies that they need to catch. They catch/subtract that amount of butterflies from the field, then determine how many butterflies are left in the field. They'll use either the butterfly printables that are included, or your choice of math tools, and represent their work on a recording sheet with pictures and/or numbers.
