UPDATED 12/5/14 and better than ever!
I've been using measurement riddles in my classroom for years now, and I love them! This is one of my personal favorites from my own classroom. Students love riddles and “secret” codes, so these materials really capture their interest as they practice essential measurement skills.
In this file, you will find a card for each letter of the alphabet. On each card is a red line. Students measure the line to the nearest 1/4 inch and record the length on their alphabet sheet. The measurements create a secret code! The code is then used to solve the 10 included riddles.
You can use this resource in a lot of different ways. You can simply print all the cards and create a low-prep center. Another idea is to laminate both the letter cards and the riddle cards and put them around the room for students to solve. I have also included an optional riddle recording sheet if you wish to have students write down the answers from each card.
At the end of the PDF file, you will find a variety of extension activity ideas. There are so many fun ways to incorporate these cards into your math routine, and even make some meaningful cross-curricular connections.
I hope you enjoy using this resource in your classroom as much as I do!
IMPORTANT:
In order for the lines to be measured accurately, you must make sure to print the file at 100% scale.
