This zip file contains many different activities (83 pages of student handouts and four PowerPoints with a total of 139 slides) which may be utilized compose a Measuring Earth unit. This set of activities includes worksheets, labs, completion notes, supporting PowerPoints and quizzes. This set of activities is suited for many earth science, environmental science or physical science classes. With teacher guidance, many components in these materials are adaptable to an enriched middle level science curriculum.

All documents are in PowerPoint, word or pdf format to allow you to edit the documents to meet your needs. These documents are well suited for use in distance learning environments. Answer keys for all student activities are provided.

Concepts addressed in this package of learning activities include but are not limited to:

  • GPS
  • fields
  • four spheres (atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and geosphere)
  • earth shape and supporting evidence
  • coordinate systems
  • latitude and longitude
  • mapping
  • frame of reference
  • solar noon
  • using the prime meridian/local longitude to determine time

  • Polaris altitude relationship to latitude
  • types of isolines
