Description
Engage your students in learning how to read, measure and convert temperature using this measuring temperature lab stations resource. This hands-on lab is great for giving students the real-world hands-on experience of using a thermometer to accurately measure various temperatures of water. Your secondary students will enjoy exploring 13 different lab stations by measuring, recording and converting different temperatures from Celsius to Fahrenheit.
Begin by reading the provided background information and answering the pre-lab questions. As a class, discuss how to properly use and read a thermometer. Practice example problems converting from Celsius to Fahrenheit. Use this temperature conversions practice problems packet as a guide to teach your students how to convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit, Fahrenheit to Celsius, Celsius to Kelvin and Kelvin to Celsius.
Set-up the 13 lab stations around the classroom as follows in the provided teacher directions. Use the provided labels to label each station around the room based on temperature setting, type of sink water (hot, room or cold) and thermometer cover exposed to light (covered, white paper, black paper, or aluminum). Students will go station to station, measuring the temperature of each flask of water, or light exposed thermometer. After reading and recording the temperature in Celsius, they will convert to Fahrenheit and provide two physical observations gathered from each lab station. Lastly, students will graph their collected data to form a line graph and a bar graph to describe the relationship between molecule speed and temperature.
Standards Covered:
- Define Temperature
- Read a Thermometer and Record Temperature
- Use the Five Senses to Record Scientific Observations
- Convert from Celsius to Fahrenheit
- Graph Collected Data in the form of a Line and Bar Graph
- Describe the Relationship between Molecule Speed and Temperature
Materials Needed (for entire lab):
- 9 Flasks
- 6 Hot Plates
- 13 Thermometers
- 4 Ring Stands (at least 2 is needed)
