Description

Subtraction Memory is a math center to build confidence in subtraction within 100 in a competitive way. Students will likely be familiar with the concept of this classic game already. Flipping two cards at a time, and solving problems to identify matches. With two sets of 50 memory cards, one featuring exclusively subtraction of tens for early in your unit and low groups, the game will stay fun and engaging over several rounds!

Included:

  • A teaching and setup guide
  • Full color instructions for students, including an example problem with different strategies for students to choose from
  • All necessary game pieces to play
  • A double-sided "whiteboard" that students can use to solve the problems with dry erase markers when laminated

You will need:

  • A laminator, to increase longevity of the game pieces and to use the "whiteboard"
  • Dry erase markers, to use the "whiteboard"

This center was designed to be used with the Big Ideas Math program, Chapter 5. All of the strategies on the "whiteboard" and in the example will be familiar to students following this program, but are easily incorporated into any lessons outside of the program.

Teaching Tip:

  • Since a game with 25 pairs of cards may take too long to complete, especially early in the unit, separate out each of the games into one game of 13 pairs and one game of 12 pairs. The answers are conveniently printed adjacent to their respective questions to make this process easier.
