Description
Students practice their speed with basic addition, as well learn how to do mental math with bigger numbers. Originally this was a back to basics workshop for middle school and high school, but is also great for grade 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Homework practice questions are included!
What you get:
- PowerPoint lesson on how to add larger numbers mentally (adding in parts) and using patterns to help add.
- Basic addition (1-18) worksheet to practice speed.
- Adding in parts worksheet for mental math.
- Adding using similarities worksheet for mental math.
Lesson breakdown:
Students start this lesson by practicing their basic addition speed. There are 4 pages worth of questions; students answer as many questions as they can in blocks of two minutes and record the number of questions they got correct on the last page of this worksheet.
The PowerPoint is then used to teach students how to add in parts. This means adding from left to right (adding the hundreds, tens, then ones). Students practice some questions on the slides and are allowed to write their process down at first to get used to it. The ultimate goal is to do this in their head.
This is the perfect time to do a short adding in parts Quizizz that I made: https://quizizz.com/admin/quiz/630fd2c56d5777001fb4fcb3?source=quiz_share
Then, students will notice some patterns when adding in the next few slides of the PowerPoint and practice some questions here as well.
Students can then work on the three worksheets for homework or for during class time.
