There are a few ways to use these cards:

  • Teacher Led - The teacher or a student leader reads a card out loud, line by line, giving time for students to mentally calculate each new step. Students then show their answers either with their fingers or by writing on individual white boards or tablets. This makes it easy for the teacher to quickly assess student answers. Alternatively, students could use one of the provided student answer sheets and the class could correct together, or if being used as an assessment, turn in for grading.
  • In Pairs - Students take turns reading cards to each other. If you want students to record their answers, you could use one answer sheet and have one student do the odds and the other do the evens.
  • Individually - Students work with each card on their own, recording answers on one of the provided answer sheets.

You could also use for Scoot, Quiz, Quiz Trade, or other games.

Teacher Tip

Here’s what teachers are saying:

✏️ "My high achievers loved this activity. They don’t always like to show their work so this provided them with opportunities to showcase their math skills. I think I learned a thing or two as well." -Jen P.

✏️ "I purchased this resource to use when we are back in the classroom BUT, I found myself using these cards during our small group Zoom calls. It requires the students to actively listen to the clues and come up with reasoning. I absolutely love this resource!!!" -Erin B.

✏️ "This product is a fantastic resource for 3rd-grade students that allows them to stretch their mathematical thinking. The flexibility in how these cards can be used means they can adapted for various classroom activities both independently and whole group." -Lisa W.

I bought a variety of these cards because they are so simple to use, need little explanation and can be turned into a center to practice skills. I can also use the information to track the students' understanding.
