I really wanted to like this activity. My students really got bogged down in getting the information from the original student viewing the premade shape to the one constructing that they didn't make any connections regarding properties of metals.

I am sorry to hear it didn't work out the way you hoped. It is definitely an activity that needs to be tuned to your specific classroom and learners, based on ability level, attention span, etc. Is there something I could do to improve the activity? I want to make sure I am providing the highest quality activity possible for as many educators as I can! :)
