Description

Start with converting customary units of length, then progress to converting metric units of length and comparing length. Students get meaningful practice through a mix of problems that reinforce measurement skills. With the various task card sets and question styles, students stay engaged while strengthening their understanding of measurement.

Length Splat Activity:

♦30 length measurement task cards with customary units (color and black/white)

♦30 length measurement task cards with metric units (color and black/white)

♦12 blank cards (color and black/white)

♦6 SPLAT cards (color and black/white)

♦Recording sheets and answer keys

Students convert units of measure for length (18 task cards) and compare units of measure for length (12 task cards). Fractions and decimals can be found on some of the task cards. The goal is to collect task cards after answering them correctly before a SPLAT card is drawn.

The answer is… What is the question?

12 measurement answer cards with customary units (color and black/white)

♦12 measurement answer cards with metric units (color and black/white)

♦4 blank cards (color and black/white)

♦Recording sheets (2 versions)

♦Example page

These are not your ordinary task cards! This activity is just what you need to flip students’ thinking from finding one right answer to generating many varied questions or problems for a given answer. As a result, students Clsee multiple representations for length measurement.

Spot the Impostor:

16 Spot the Impostor task cards with customary units (color and black/white)

♦4 Spot the Imposter Challenge cards with customary units (color and black/white)

16 Spot the Impostor task cards with metric units (color and black/white)

♦Recording sheets and answer keys

This activity focuses on students thinking mathematically to identify the one measurement that is not equivalent to the other two measurements. Students then justify their thinking.

Use these task card sets in a math center, as a walk-the-room activity, or for independent practice.

My students loved the idea of "spot the imposter". This was a little tricky for them on the harder ones. We worked through some together. Thank you.

My students loved completing these task cards as a review. Some used with a partner and others used as a scoot around the room.

Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36),...
Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.
