Description
Microscopic fiber analysis is an easy and fun lab that every Forensic Science teacher can do. All you need are microscopes and fibers, which are easy to get for free (or very cheaply)!
This product is a “Known Fibers Field guide” booklet or packet that students use for their microscope Fiber Drawings. You can choose whether to have it printed in booklet (legal size paper) or packet (8.5x11 paper) format.
Each page includes two circles - one for drawing the whole fiber and one for drawing the individual strands. There are places for title and magnification, as well as guided notes to help students with the most effective descriptions.
This guide includes unknown fibers as well. Students use their drawings and descriptions to identify 3 unknown fibers.
Four pages of summarizing questions at the end help students use common traits to group fibers and to process what they have learned.
This product includes:

- Linen (natural- from a plant)
- Hemp (natural -from a plant)
- Silk (natural -from an insect)
- Wool (natural -from an animal - mammal)
- Angora (natural -from an animal - mammal)
- Mohair (natural -from an animal - mammal)
- Polyester (man-made- synthetic)
- Acrylic (man-made -synthetic)
- Nylon (man-made - synthetic)
- Modal (man-made - regenerated -from wood chips)
- Rayon (man-made - regenerated -from wood chips)
- Unknown 1- students use the evidence to determine the fiber
- Unknown 2- students use the evidence to determine the fiber
- Unknown 3 - students use the evidence to determine the fiber
The unknowns are the teachers’ discretion - choose fibers that are easy for you to obtain!
