Description

Focus on the cross cutting concepts of STRUCTURE and FUNCTION as you work to prepare your students to work with microscopes safely. In this lab, students will work on self identifying the main structures and functions of the microscope. Then, they will elaborate by working with a peer to review and check their work. A rubric is provided to students to self assess their work and self score their progress. Students working with peers and grading themselves feel empowered in this lab rather than feeling bored solving simplistic fill in the blank memory worksheets for the parts of the microscope. Later, you can give your students the "microscopes test" which includes partnering students and asking them to list the structures, functions, and having a partner check for accuracy. Students love this partner test and ask for them more often!

NGSSMS-LS1-2
Develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and ways the parts of cells contribute to the function. Emphasis is on the cell functioning as a whole system and the primary role of identified parts of the cell, specifically the nucleus, chloroplasts, mitochondria, cell membrane, and cell wall. Assessment of organelle structure/function relationships is limited to the cell wall and cell membrane. Assessment of the function of the other organelles is limited to their relationship to the whole cell. Assessment does not include the biochemical function of cells or cell parts.
