Excel can be tricky for students to comprehend & sometimes they have trouble understanding the usefulness of spreadsheets!

  • Give students the following assignment to complete using a simple calculator, paper, and pencil.
  • After students have completed the first section, students will complete the SAME assignment using excel so they can compare the difference in time and efficiency.
  • The assignment will include data, finding averages, changing/ adding information, and sorting and will show students why excel is useful!
  • Answer key included!

I ended up not using for this year, but definitely see the value in incorporating it for next year. Even with directions, some of my students did the calculations manually and once they saw how to use the fill handle to copy and paste formulas they were like — that is so cool! I think having them do this first definitely shows them how spreadsheets can be valuable to them.
