Middle School Calculation Practice can be rote, joyless, boring, and downright boring, and those emotions may all happen in one kid!!
I found a way to get my students excited about practicing calculations with integers and fractions. WITHOUT a CALCULATOR!! I couldn't believe how receptive they were! The theme music drew them in, but the mathematics kept them there!
I wasn't introduced matrices to very late in my math journey. I spend time sharing with the students how excited I was about the concept, and that it is in use every day in all of our technology. Add the movie references and SCORE!!
The lesson covers:
Addition, Subtraction, & Multiplication with integers and fractions
Area & Dimension
Higher level thinking
with vocabulary, examples, practice problems, video & audio fun, references to real world, higher order thinking questions and teacher notes
good for independent practice, group work or homework. 20 questions with calculations and thinking questions.
The engagement I got from this lesson was awesome - one of mine and my students favorite lessons! This is one they bring up years after they left me. Not to mention it would rock an evaluation!
