Description
Middle School Calculation Practice can be rote, joyless, boring, and downright boring, and those emotions may all happen in one kid!!
I found a way to get my students excited about practicing calculations with integers and fractions. WITHOUT a CALCULATOR!! I couldn't believe how receptive they were! The theme music drew them in, but the mathematics kept them there!
I wasn't introduced matrices to very late in my math journey. I spend time sharing with the students how excited I was about the concept, and that it is in use every day in all of our technology. Add the movie references and SCORE!!
The lesson covers:
Addition, Subtraction, & Multiplication with integers and fractions
Area & Dimension
Real-world Application
Higher level thinking
Resources Provided:
PowerPoint with vocabulary, examples, practice problems, video & audio fun, references to real world, higher order thinking questions and teacher notes
Student Practice good for independent practice, group work or homework. 20 questions with calculations and thinking questions.
The engagement I got from this lesson was awesome - one of mine and my students favorite lessons! This is one they bring up years after they left me. Not to mention it would rock an evaluation!
