Description
What’s worse than being the new student in school? Being the new student who is placed in a class that is too easy or too hard. Let’s get them placed in a class that is just right for them and see not only what they know but how they think about math!
This placement tool is designed to help find the best class for middle school students. After students take the test, you will have a good idea if the student is ready for 6th grade math, 7th grade math or Pre-Algebra.
- Give new or struggling students the placement tool and ask them to try every problem and show their work so you will be able to see their thinking.
- Check their answers and tally up the score for each column throughout the test. There are 20 questions, in total, in each column. I suggest using a 75% success rate (15 questions correct) as the cutoff for each column, but you may use whatever score is applicable for your school and situation.
The first column will tell you whether a student is ready for 6th grade
math, the second will tell you whether they are ready for 7th grade
math, and the last if they are ready for Pre-Algebra.
- In addition to getting a score from this placement tool, letting the child’s new teacher see how the student worked out each problem and which problems they had no idea how to start will be very valuable.
If a student is ready for Algebra or Geometry, I have placement tools for high school math on my Teachers Pay Teachers store as well. They are also bundled together for your convenience!
Thank you for helping our new and struggling students. As a 30-year math teacher, I saw the frustration so many students faced after being placed in the wrong class. Let’s help them be successful right from the beginning of the year!
