Mineral Identification Mini-Lab
Share

Description

This is a FREEBIE for a basic Mineral Identification Lab. Most Science kits come with a sample of rocks and minerals and this is a simple way for students to use the kit and easily list the qualities or characteristics of each mineral. Students will look at samples and identify their color, hardness, luster, streak, and texture.

The following background information is required for the students to complete this effectively:
-How to test hardness (fingernail, steel nail, penny, etc.)
-Use of a streak plate.
-Description of texture (smooth, jagged, bumpy -whatever terms you want to use)
-Luster (earthy, glassy, metallic)

Students will use the mineral samples, their science text and other reference materials to complete this page. They will also need to analyze the information in order to write a short summary of their findings.

These were just perfect for the rockhounding field trip our self-contained class took. Each student carried their identification worksheet in a covered sleeve while they worked. When they found their specimens, they took them back to our field expert volunteers and filled them out. The format was simple enough that my students with disabilities could easily fill them out with limited help while my twice-exceptional students found them helpful and engaging. They fit the bill perfectly!
