Description

Put your students' geometry and measurement skills to the test with this hands-on Mini-Golf Course Design Challenge! This project-based learning (PBL) activity transforms students into course architects who must use protractors, straightedges, and rulers to draft a functional, mathematically precise 9-hole mini-golf course on graph paper.

Instead of solving isolated, abstract textbook problems, students must manipulate line structures and calculate paths of motion, reinforcing geometric standards through an engaging, real-world application.

Project Components & Learning Goals:

  • Geometric Course Outlines (Boundaries): Students apply standard definitions by drawing grass borders that incorporate:
    • Parallel & Perpendicular Lines
    • Right Angles ($90^\circ$), Acute Angles ($<90^\circ$), & Obtuse Angles ($90^\circ$ to $180^\circ$)
    • Reflex Angles ($>180^\circ$): Pushes students to conceptualize and measure the "outside" of a corner.

  • Precision Ball Paths: Students trace the exact path a golf ball would travel using a protractor to measure technical degree increments: 30, 45, 60, 90, 270, 300, and 320 degrees.
  • Academic Standards Focus: Directly aligns with 4th and 5th-grade geometric properties—specifically targeting drawing lines, identifying attributes, and reading inner/outer protractor scales.

What’s Included?

  • The Mission Brief: A student-facing task overview setting up the architectural role-play scenario.
  • Requirements Checklist Grid: A step-by-step checklist detailing the exact constraints required for both the "Hole Outlines" and the "Ball Paths."
  • Built-In Grading Matrix: A combination student self-check tool and clear teacher scoring section evaluating element precision, angle calculation, and general craftsmanship/neatness.

Why Teachers Love It:

  • Universal High Engagement: Mini-golf provides an immediate, relatable hook that keeps students focused while working through high-level angle demands.
  • Perfect Assessment Tool: Serves as a great performance task replacement for a standard unit test on geometric lines and measurements.
  • Encourages Spatial Precision: Demands careful use of a ruler and protractor, building critical math-tool fluency.
