Description

Looking for a missing addends intervention that actually works for 1st grade? This first grade missing addends math intervention is designed for small groups, RTI, and math intervention time when students struggle with addition and subtraction concepts, not just fact fluency.

You pull a small group for a missing addends intervention. You model the problem, give practice, and hope it clicks—but students still guess, add both numbers together, or start counting from 1 every time. For many students, missing addends aren’t a fact fluency issue. They’re a conceptual understanding issue. Without understanding what the equal sign means, how parts and totals relate, or how to count on efficiently, practice alone won’t lead to growth. This Missing Addends Intervention is designed to reteach the skill intentionally using explicit instruction, aligned assessments, and a clear plan.

The intervention follows a Concrete–Representational–Abstract (CRA) progression so students build understanding before being expected to solve missing addends mentally.

This intervention includes:

  • Quick Start guide with step-by-step implementation
  • Skill map showing how missing addend skills progress
  • Decision rules to determine where to begin instruction
  • Nine Pages of Word-for-word teaching scripts (Concrete, Representational, Abstract)
  • Guided practice pages aligned to each script
  • Twelve baseline/weekly progress monitoring assessments
  • Common misconceptions with error-correction guidance
  • Entry and exit criteria to support RTI/MTSS documentation

Perfect for:

  • Tier 2 and Tier 3 math interventions
  • Small groups or one-on-one instruction
  • RTI/MTSS progress monitoring
  • Intervention blocks and support services

What’s Included

  • Quick Start Guide for easy implementation
  • Skill Map showing how missing addend skills progress
  • Decision Rules to determine where to start and when to move on

Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
