Description

These 40 task cards give adult ESL grammar students focused practice with modal verbs through eight different question types, so they're reviewing the same concept from multiple angles instead of drilling it one way.

Modals are small but mighty. They carry meaning that changes everything: possibility, necessity, ability, permission, advice. Students who aren’t great with modals might say things they don't quite mean. The difference between "you must do this" and "you should do this" matters, and so does knowing which one to use.

With this 40 card set, your students will

  • identify the modal verb in a sentence.
  • choose the correct sentence from four options.
  • fill in the blank with an appropriate modal.
  • match modals to their meanings.
  • match modal meanings with example sentences.
  • fix errors in sentences with modals.
  • decide whether modal-related rules are true or false.
  • write an original sentence using a specific modal and meaning.

✅ Digital Easel version included

HOW TO USE THIS

Set up the cards as stations and have students rotate through, use them as a whole-class warm-up activity, assign them for independent practice, or pull out specific question types to review whatever modal function you're teaching that day. The variety of question formats means you can use this resource more than once without students feeling like they're doing the same thing again and again.

The Easel version gives you a paperless option when you need it.

THIS WAS CREATED FOR YOUR ADULT ESL STUDENTS

Originally designed for high-beginner to intermediate adult ESL students, this set respects where students are while pushing them toward genuine accuracy.

This also works well for secondary English students and native English-speaking high school students who need to fill gaps in their grammar knowledge.

GRAB IT AND GO

Download, print & cut (or open the Easel version), and you're ready. No prep required beyond deciding how you want to run it.
