Do your students struggle with understanding money, counting money and how to use money in real world situations?
Then this money lessons for children unit is for you. It was developed with my Grade 3 class in order to create a real world experience using money today. Many hands on experiences and real life examples are included as well as skills to practice handling money, counting money, earning money, and budgeting money. The goal is to provide children with the tools necessary to use money effectively in their daily lives.
Directions are given for how to teach each lesson. Check out the lesson summaries below.
Templates for creating the debit cards, labeling piggy banks, and making a debit machine, as well as practice grids, money worksheets and samples, are included for use with the lessons.
Math concepts include counting money, making change, adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing money, writing money amounts, using decimals and percentages, calculating costs and expenses, and budgeting.

Here is a brief summary of what is covered in each lesson.
Lesson 1
Discuss what a debit card is and why parents might have one. Create a school debit card.
Lesson 2
Generate a list of things to buy (or use list given)
Create a jobs list that 7-10 year olds could do (or use list given)
Lesson 3
Practice making purchases and deducting money from account
Plan jobs to earn more money
Keep a running balance of expenses and earnings
Lesson 4
Choose 5 different jobs. Work for 2 weeks doing one job at a time.
Deposit earnings in the bank.
Lesson 5
Create piggy banks for giving, saving/growing, goal money, and fun money
Plan how the money is divided into the different piggy banks.
Practice breaking money down using different dollar amounts.
Lesson 6
Make piggy banks.
Practice putting money into them using school play money.
Earn money for different jobs and place the money in the jars. (role playing)
A template for pig labels is included.
Lesson 7
Shopping Event Celebration Planning
Create things to sell and have a big shopping event.
Make a debit card machine to use for the sales.
Lesson 8
Have a shopping event celebration as a culminating activity.
This unit can take 1-2 months depending on the students and their understanding of how to use money.
The piggy bank labels are included.
