Monster Hotel Project An Interdisciplinary, Creative Project-Based Learning Experience | Grades 4–8
Looking for a high-engagement project that blends creativity, critical thinking, and real-world skills?
Monster Hotel is an interdisciplinary project-based learning (PBL) experience where students design and operate a hotel created specifically for monsters. Through imaginative design and structured academic tasks, students apply skills from ELA, math, science, and social studies while solving authentic problems.
This is not a themed worksheet-based activity, it’s a flexible PBL toolkit that allows teachers to select the components that best fit their instructional goals.
What Students Will Do
Students will:
- Design a hotel tailored to the needs of unique monster guests
- Create rooms, amenities, menus, and entertainment options
- Apply math skills to pricing, budgeting, and profit
- Write descriptively and persuasively for authentic purposes
- Explore science concepts like adaptations and environments
- Collaborate, problem-solve, and make design decisions
The imaginative context keeps students engaged while the academic work remains purposeful and standards-based.
This project is intentionally designed to be modular, allowing teachers to implement it in a way that works for their classroom.
Grade Levels: 4–8
Time Frame: 3–5 class periods (with options to extend into a longer PBL unit)
