Ideas for Use

The point of consciousness for these exercises is to reveal to the child the relationships and patterns between numbers in fact families or similar facts.  If a child sees the pattern, gets excited, and starts filling out Bingo Boards or worksheets in a rapid manner, goal ACHIEVED.  Memorizing the facts is NOT the goal with these lessons, but they help build connections so that memorization will be easier to achieve when the child is developmentally ready.

  • Bingo 1
    • Child chooses a cut combination (math fact problem card) at random, thinks of the answer, and places the correct answer card on the square for that problem on the Bingo Board.
    • Optionally, the child could simply write the correct answer in the square for that problem on a paper Bingo Board.

  • Bingo 2
    • Material version:  Child chooses an answer card at random, thinks of a math fact problem that gives that answer, and places the answer card on the correct problem square on the Bingo Board.
    • Worksheet version:  The answers are provided, child writes in the math facts that match, and write the answer in the correct problem square on a paper Bingo Board

  • Bingo 3
    • Material version:  Child sorts all answer cards by answer (grouping all the same numbers), thinks of all the math fact problems that give that answer, and places all the answer cards with the same number on the correct problem squares on the Bingo Board.
    • Worksheet version:  The answers are given along with the number of math facts that give that answer, the child writes in all the math fact problems that give that answer, and write the answers in the correct problem squares on a paper Bingo Board.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8.
Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
