Description
Enhance your math lessons with these engaging monthly themed math talks for the whole year! Accessible through Google Slides, all you need is a Google account to get started. I've used these in my first and second grade classrooms, but the can also be used in the Kindergarten classroom as well.
Foster a dynamic learning environment by providing students with multiple opportunities to:
- discuss their mathematical concepts
- boost their confidence.
- promote consistent communication of their mathematical reasoning
- and witness significant growth in both math knowledge and confidence, just as I did in my own classroom!
What are number talks?
- quick prompts that can be completed in 5 - 10 minutes
- allow students to verbally share mathematical thinking
- work on number sense and mental math
- low floor, high ceiling tasks, so every student can feel successful
- easy, quick way for you to assess students skills.
- no/low prep for you!
The Prompts
- Make it Monday: has students work on creating equations that equal the number displayed on the prompt.
- Draw it Tuesday: students put their geometry skills into practice and draw, label, and categorize shapes.
- Which One Doesn't Belong Wednesday: students figure out what number/object does not belong in the set and use their communication skills to support their reasoning.
- Solve it Thursday: students practice solving word problems, open ended questions, and creating their own math questions. These questions often have more than one answer so students get practice showing their work and expanding the possibilities of more than one answer in math.
- Graph It Friday: students survey their classmates and record the data on a provided graph.
Students can work on whiteboards, mentally, or using the student recording sheets that are also included in this resource.
