Motion Graphs: Intro Task Cards, Fix the Mistakes & Class Practice

Distance–Time & Velocity–Time Graphs

This resource bundle introduces motion graphs through visual interpretation, discussion, and reasoning, helping students build a solid conceptual foundation before working with equations.

Students begin with an introductory task card set that focuses on interpreting distance–time and velocity–time graphs. The cards are designed to target common misconceptions and help students explain motion using accurate scientific language. A self-checking version with answers on the back is included, along with a student answer sheet and complete answer key.

A matching PowerPoint version of the same task cards is also included. This allows the questions to be used for whole-class instruction, guided practice, or quick formative assessment, while keeping the visuals and graphs consistent across formats.

To deepen understanding, students then complete a Fix the Mistakes activity. In this activity, students analyze incorrect claims about motion graphs and explain why each claim is wrong using evidence from the graph. This component encourages reasoning, discussion, and deeper conceptual understanding rather than simple identification.

Together, these activities work well as an introduction to motion graphs, a misconception check, or a review before problem-solving and calculations.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PowerPoint editable?
No. The PowerPoint slides are intentionally flattened to preserve formatting, graph accuracy, and consistent visuals.

Why isn’t a Google Slides version included?
Motion graphs depend on precise slopes, scales, and labels. Flattening the slides ensures the scientific meaning of each graph remains accurate and prevents accidental changes that could alter student understanding.

Can this still be used digitally?
Yes. The PowerPoint works well for whole-class instruction, guided discussion, or formative assessment. Students can respond verbally, on paper, or using the included answer sheets.

Are answer keys included?
Yes. Complete answer keys are included for the task cards and the Fix the Mistakes activity.

What grade levels does this work best for?
This resource is ideal for middle school physical science and high school physics, especially when introducing or reviewing motion graphs.
