Description

Learn about the Winter Olympics and create your own Olympic-Inspired fun using simple machines and creativity!

This STEM Challenge is an engaging activity that inspires creativity and encourages students to bring unique and thoughtful ideas to their work!

My students LOVE certain "furious" birds And the way they fly around really lends itself to an olympic-style project that incorporates simple machines, the scientific method, 3D shapes, problem solving, measurement, graphing, critical thinking, evaluation and reflection!

All that packed into one REALLY FUN unit! I’ve done this with my class for two years and we have so much fun. It’s a fantastic opportunity to just teach teach teach!! You want teachable moments: This is the assignment for you!

Chock-a-block full of strands and objectives from Math, Science and Language Arts, this unit covers more outcomes than any worksheet ever could!

Students work together to create a sporting event, make athletes to participate in the events, test the shapes and then reflect on the experience by evaluating the data and using it to think critically about the results.

Each page is explained clearly and in short sentences and includes additional teaching ideas and opportunities (you can see this in the preview). Teacher pages clearly explain what each student page is used for, gives teaching tips and includes research ideas.

You don’t have to use the 3D solids I include in this packet. You can use any solids you like. I’ve included:

- Cube

- Rectangular prism

- Pentagonal pyramid

- Tetrahedron

- Hexagonal prism

- Cylinder

Packet includes planning pages, 3D nets to print and colour, math journal printables, teacher pages that explain each printable and NEW posters to explain different types of energy students can use to create their events.

Download the preview to see the quality and fun this packet will bring to your classroom!

This was a fun activity that my kids immediately got excited about. Having just completed a unit on 3D shapes it was a fun way to finish and I loved the connection to science, taking their learning to the next level. These also became a great display in the classroom and generated a lot of good discussion about shapes and their properties. Thank you.

My students enjoyed this! They worked in pairs to create bird centered games, altered a bit from olympic sports. Thank you for this resource - easy to prep and have students do.
