Description

MultiDigit Subtraction with Regrouping can be fun and interactive with this self-checking Pixel Art activity. This differentiated digital activity is the perfect way to independently practice subtracting multi digit numbers with regrouping using the Standard Algorithm. You can use this pixel art during your subtraction unit, for test-prep or during spiral review anytime in the school year. Great for math centers, for homework, for early finishers or as an extension activity for your students.

What is Pixel Art?

Pixel Art is a formatted Google Sheet designed to automatically reveal a mystery image as students enter correct answers. It is self-checking. If a student’s answer is correct the answer cell changes color and part of the image is revealed in bursts of pixels. If answers are not correct, nothing happens. Pixel Art is one of our students’ favorite activities. They are motivated to get the right answers to try to figure out the mystery image.

CC Standard 4.NBT.4 describes that students will be able to, “Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.”

This particular pixel art activity gives students the opportunity to practice this understanding by requiring that they subtract multi-digit numbers using the Standard Algorithm. The numbers in the problems are stacked and formatted so students receive feedback after subtracting the digits in each place as well as for every regrouping they do. In this way, students do not have to wait until the end to know if they have made a mistake or to try to figure out where their error is. It is the most supportive for students who are beginning to use the standard algorithm as they receive immediate feedback step by step. You will receive 2 versions of the same pixel art with different number sizes. This will make it easy to differentiate for your students who may be at different skill levels. Your students will be able to practice the same grade level concept with different number sizes.

In addition, you will receive printable worksheets of both versions for students who need to record their thinking on paper first. The printables are completely optional and can be used to:

  • Model how to complete the activity
  • Extend the Pixel Art Activity. Students work out their solutions on paper first, then use the pixel art to “check their work”.
  • Create a partner experience. Students can work together on solving the problems more easily on paper.
  • Hold students accountable for showing their work in conjunction with completing their pixel art assignments.

This Pixel Art Activity includes:

  • One Student Copy of 5- and 6-Digit Subtraction Pixel Art Google Sheet™ (formatted and ready to be assigned in Google Classroom)
  • One Student Copy of 4-Digit Subtraction Pixel Art Google Sheet™ (formatted and ready to be assigned in Google Classroom)
  • 2 Teacher Keys of the Pixel Art Google Sheets (one for each version)
  • Printable copies of both activities
  • A list of helpful tips when using Pixel Art in your classroom
  • A list of Ideas for how to utilize this resource in your classroom

My class loves all of the pixel art activities! This was a cute one. I also appreciate how the boxes change colors when they are incorrect.
