Description
The purpose of this project is to give your students a deeper understanding of the components and use of various functions studied in Algebra 2/Math 3. The following functions are considered for use in completing this project:
- Linear Functions
- Quadratic Functions
- Absolute Value Functions
- Piecewise Functions (Multiple Function Pieces)
- Polynomial Function (Cubic)
- Polynomial Function (Quartic)
- Exponential Function
- Logarithmic Function
- Rational Function
- Trigonometric Function (Sine)
- Trigonometric Function (Cosine)
- Equation of a Circle
The above function list can be modified as necessary by the teacher to suit their specific curriculum content requirements. I have used this project in my Math 3 classes after we completed our study of the various functions specified in our curriculum. They had a great time completing the project and learned a lot about how to define a function, view it in the graphing calculator and then transfer it to the object on the graphing grid. In addition to the construction of the function art object, the students have to complete a companion function identification sheet that requires the students to properly define each line or curve used in the project. Seven (7) actual student project work samples are included in the attached document to give you a feel as to what can be constructed. Finally a grading rubric is included to compile the final grade for the project. The project description paper is a native MS Word file that can be modified by the teacher to suit their particular class application and desires.
