Math skills covered: Interpret a multiplication equation as a comparison (4th grade standard 4.OA.1)

This engaging math activity gets your students up and moving around the classroom while focusing on math standards and critical thinking skills. The use of secret codes will keep your students engaged from beginning to end while competing to find the final code.

How does the Math Escape Room work? This math escape room has students working through FIVE challenges. Each challenge has 5 math problems related to the common core standard and a puzzle decoder. Do I need real locks?

Not at all! There are NO PROPS needed to complete this escape room. Of course, if you want to make it feel more like an escape, you can program an ALPHA lock or create a password protected PDF with the FINAL 5-digit code.

Is there any prep?

This is a NO PREP, print and go escape room! The only thing you need to do is print and hang the “challenges” and “decoders.” There are NO CRAZY SHAPES to cut out and NO SILLY ENVELOPES to stuff. This was made to make your teacher life easier! You may also consider hiding the puzzles to make it more like a scavenger hunt.

How do I group students?

First, you’ll need to decide if you are working with partners, groups, or as a whole class. This will help determine the number of copies you need to print. I personally prefer partners since there are only 5 questions per challenge. This way students can ask each other questions and bounce puzzle ideas off each other.

How difficult are the puzzles?

Students will answer 5 questions per challenge and the puzzles progressively get more difficult. There are “hints” provided for each puzzle in the event that they get stuck. More than likely, they WILL get “stuck.” This is an escape room activity, so they’re supposed to be challenged! The kids MIGHT struggle the first time they see the puzzles…that’s OK! Let them think it out for a bit before you help them. This is where critical thinking skills come in. I PROMISE…your kids CAN do this! The “AHA” moment when they figure out how to solve a puzzle is priceless!

How are Think Tank Escape Rooms different than others?

What sets us apart is the element of PUZZLE decoding! Other math escapes simply give clues after completing a task, there’s no “puzzle solving” or “decoding”. We think our puzzles add an extra layer of fun for all! It also ensures the game lasts a little longer, so you feel confident in your purchase.
