Description

Are your 3rd-grade students ready for multiplication and division mastery? This full-unit resource provides everything you need — from lesson plans and pacing guide to concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations of multiplication (arrays, repeated addition, grouping) and division (quotients, equal groups, word problems). With differentiated options for remediation and enrichment, students at all levels stay on target and grow their skills.

This comprehensive multiplication and division unit was thoughtfully designed to support third-grade teachers in delivering high-quality math instruction. Whether you’re looking for a complete curriculum or a supplement to your current program, this resource is packed with tools that build conceptual understanding, provide meaningful practice, and help students connect math to the real world. Every lesson, game, and task supports the development of fluency and flexibility with multiplication and division — all while keeping student thinking at the center.

This unit includes a pacing guide and detailed lesson plans, so you can focus more on teaching and less on planning. It’s ideal for whole-class instruction, math centers, small groups, or independent practice. Each component is aligned with third-grade standards, emphasizing conceptual learning before procedural fluency. You’ll find a perfect mix of hands-on activities, engaging games, meaningful word problems, and skill-building worksheets that challenge students while offering multiple entry points.

What Makes This Unit So Effective?
One of the biggest strengths of this resource is its thoughtful progression from concrete to pictorial to abstract learning. Early lessons use manipulatives and visuals to help students build a strong foundation in multiplication and division. These activities then transition into more abstract work and higher-level problem solving. Students explore and represent multiplication through repeated addition, arrays, and grouping models — providing multiple access points for learning. Division is introduced in a similarly scaffolded way using hands-on strategies and real-world contexts.

Additionally, the unit places a strong emphasis on understanding and applying the properties of multiplication — including the identity, associative, commutative, and distributive properties — so students begin to see math as a system they can work within, rather than a set of rules to memorize.

This resource is listed as a multiplication and division unit, but to me seems to be more of a collection of supplemental materials. The pretest and post test have questions related to multiplication on a number line, but there are no activities that teach this skill in the resource. Most of the activities I used in the first couple weeks had a typo of some kind, either in the wording or with the actual problems. I stopped using it.

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
