HOW THE LEVELS WORK (and Why They’re Designed This Way)

This program follows a traditional ×1, ×2, ×3, ×4 progression because this structure is intuitive for students and easy for teachers to implement.

However, the program is intentionally designed to help students recognize that the number of new facts decreases at each level. The Multiplication Facts By Level chart helps students to see this clearly!

For example, by the time students reach the ×9 level, they have already practiced
1x9, 9×1, 2x9, 9×2, 3x9, 9×3, 4x9, 9×4, 5x9, 9×5, 6x9, 9×6, 7x9, 9×7, 8x9, and 9×8 in the previous levels (through the commutative property of multiplication).

This means there is only one truly new fact (9×9) to learn, while previously learned facts continue to be reviewed through practice pages and one-minute fact tests.

This structure:

• reduces cognitive overload
• builds confidence as students progress
• allows students to focus on mastery instead of memorizing large sets of new facts at once
  

Review is intentionally embedded throughout every level, ensuring that fluency continues to strengthen over time.

SUPPORTING CONCEPTUAL UNDERSTANDING

While this is a fluency-focused program, conceptual understanding is intentionally supported—especially at the start of each level.

Each level begins with a lesson page that introduces new facts using:

• number lines
• arrays
• the commutative property
  

Facts are framed as how many groups × how many in each group. For example, for the x3 facts, students will first see 4×3, 5×3, and 6×3 before seeing the reversed facts (3x4, 3x5, 3x6).

This reinforces:

• multiplication as equal groups
• skip counting as a thinking support
• meaningful connections between concepts and facts
  

As students gain confidence, they naturally transition to faster recall without relying on strategies long term.

Using the Fluency Books

These booklets are designed to be flexible and easy to use:

• Have students complete one page per day
• Time each page (goal: 5 minutes)
• Students may repeat a level as needed until mastery is demonstrated

Use them:

• in small groups with targeted instruction
• as whole-class timed practice
• for independent work or centers
• as take-home or homework packets

Use them to:
