Description

In need of a fresh approach to help your students master their multiplication facts? In these Multiplication Facts Intervention Activities for Multiplying by 8, students complete a variety of count-by activities to help them increase their number sense and master their multiplication and/or addition facts.

With activities like Find the Missing Multiple, Which Number Does Not Belong?, Multiples of __ Searches (where students find a chain of multiples in a wordsearch-like activity), and analyzing patterns in a 120's table, students practice their number sense and count-by mastery in a variety of ways.

Many students who are not mastering their multiplication facts need to develop greater number sense and increase their "count by" speed and ability. These activities go beyond memorization activities like multiplication fact flash cards and instead, offer students new and fresh ways to engage with their multiplication fact knowledge.

With these number sense activities, students develop better number sense as they look for patterns in fact families and verbalize why certain numbers do not belong in a fact family. By completing these multiplication activities again and again for each fact family, students have fun learning their multiples and improve their recall of multiplication facts.

The tasks in this intervention set focus on multiplying by 8.

Included in Multiplication Facts for 8s:

→ Background information for the teacher

✔ Intervention Goals

✔ Definition for Number Sense (to be shared with students)

✔ a "Number Sense" explanation specific to the 8's fact family

→ Activities

✔ 120's chart for analyzing patterns in multiples of 8

✔ Which number does not belong? (12 problems in worksheet format, "Extend Your Thinking" journal page format, and task cards for small groups and centers)

✔ Find the Missing Multiple (12 regular problems, 6 challenge problems in worksheet format and task cards for small groups and centers)

✔ 2 Multiples of 8 Searches with 3 solutions within each puzzle

✔ Detailed Answer Keys

I LOVED this resources, so much that I bought it for multiple facts. I had a lower class this year so each day we started with the 100s chart for a number and listed all the multiples, stopping to notice patters. Then in groups students figured out the "puzzles" finding which multiple did not belong. Just a great resource!

Multiply one-digit whole numbers by multiples of 10 in the range 10–90 (e.g., 9 × 80, 5 × 60) using strategies based on place value and properties of operations.
Fluently multiply and divide within 100, using strategies such as the relationship between multiplication and division (e.g., knowing that 8 × 5 = 40, one knows 40 ÷ 5 = 8) or properties of operations. By the end of Grade 3, know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers.
Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the addition table or multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations. For example, observe that 4 times a number is always even, and explain why 4 times a number can be decomposed into two equal addends.
