Use this slide deck to explore multiplication patterns and divisibility rules for finding factors.

The benefit of discovery/inquiry lessons is how engaged the kids can be in something *they* discovered.

The downside is – how long they take. Students need chances to engage in repeated reasoning about important ideas. We don’t have enough time to do such a long lesson over and over again.


SOLUTION

•Do an inquiry lesson once, where students color or circle on their own hundreds charts to find these patterns.

•Use this slideshow briefly on multiple days to have the class quickly re-discover the patterns & (divisibility rules).


As you click through ask “What do you notice?” Help students verbalize the patterns they see in two ways: first visual patterns, but then numerical patterns. Examples:

2's Visual Pattern: Multiples are all in 5 lines
2's Numerical Pattern: Multiples only end in 2 4 6 8 or 10

9's Visual Pattern: Multiples are in a diagonal line
9's Numerical Pattern: Digits always add up to 9 or a multiple of 9 (give hint to help see this)

Use the last slide to practice divisibility rules.
