This 8-page lesson packet covers everything you need to teach multiplicative comparison word problems with multiplication and division.
Multiplicative comparison refers to the type of word problems where one quantity is ___ times as great as the other quantity. Students need to direct the problem in order to tell whether they need to multiply to find the missing quantity or divide. This is especially confusing because every problem uses the word "times" which many students have learned to be a key word for multiplication. By setting up an inequality to organize the information from the problem, the process becomes much less confusing.
For each problem students are asked to:
⇒Set up an inequality
⇒Organize the information from the problem
⇒Answer in a complete sentence
This lesson is designed for 4th grade as it aligns perfectly to 4.OA.2, but could be used in any upper elementary or middle school classroom where students struggle with choosing the operation.
This lesson packet includes:
⇒Teacher-Lead Example Problems
⇒3-Page Independent Practice
