Description

This is an introduction to multiplying two binomials using the Distributive Property and FOIL (First, Outer, Inner, Last) Method. There is also an activity on multiplying binomials using the Box (Four Squares) Method.

This lesson plan includes a warm-up activity, minilesson with guided steps through the process, examples, class activities and a worksheet for homework. Answer keys included.

Common Core standards for High School Algebra and 6th- and 7th-grade math are included on the cover page.

This lesson is part of a Unit Plan: "Multiplying Binomials and Factoring Trinomials Unit Plan" which can be found here:
http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Multiplying-Binomials-and-Factoring-Trinomials-Unit-Plan-488974

I also have a second lesson plan (Multiplying Binomials Using FOIL, Pt. II) that includes more practice with FOIL with more challenging examples.

I love this resource! I used it with my daughter as a teaching tool, skill practice, and as notes in her Math Notebook. She goes back and refers to it whenever she has a problem.

Apply the properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. For example, apply the distributive property to the expression 3 (2 + ๐˜น) to produce the equivalent expression 6 + 3๐˜น; apply the distributive property to the expression 24๐˜น + 18๐˜บ to produce the equivalent expression 6 (4๐˜น + 3๐˜บ); apply properties of operations to ๐˜บ + ๐˜บ + ๐˜บ to produce the equivalent expression 3๐˜บ.
Apply properties of operations as strategies to add, subtract, factor, and expand linear expressions with rational coefficients.
Use the structure of an expression to identify ways to rewrite it. For example, see ๐˜นโด โ€“ ๐˜บโด as (๐˜นยฒ)ยฒ โ€“ (๐˜บยฒ)ยฒ, thus recognizing it as a difference of squares that can be factored as (๐˜นยฒ โ€“ ๐˜บยฒ)(๐˜นยฒ + ๐˜บยฒ).
