Description

Here is a set of 20 challenging word problems that are a mix of multiplication and division with fractions. There are whole numbers, proper fractions, and mixed numbers.

This is also included in my 6th Grade Curriculum Bundle! (save over 35%!)

I did this with my 6th graders, and it was a challenging activity---it really made them think because the cards are all mixed, and they had to rely on prior knowledge and number sense to know when they divide or multiply, Using them as a cooperative learning activity gets your kids TALKING about why they chose to multiply or divide the fractions. It's great!!!!

These cards are perfect for:

-Scoot

-Showdown (Kagan Activity)

-Cooperative Learning Activities

-Math Center

Included in this file are:

20 task cards featuring multiplying and dividing fractions in WORD PROBLEMS

1 Student Recording Sheet

My students enjoyed using this resource. I worked a couple of the problems with them and then allowed them to complete the rest with a partner. They found it very engaging.

Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems involving division of fractions by fractions, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. For example, create a story context for (2/3) ÷ (3/4) and use a visual fraction model to show the quotient; use the relationship between multiplication and division to explain that (2/3) ÷ (3/4) = 8/9 because 3/4 of 8/9 is 2/3. (In general, (𝘢/𝘣) ÷ (𝘤/𝘥) = 𝘢𝘥/𝘣𝘤.) How much chocolate will each person get if 3 people share 1/2 lb of chocolate equally? How many 3/4-cup servings are in 2/3 of a cup of yogurt? How wide is a rectangular strip of land with length 3/4 mi and area 1/2 square mi?
