Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

Students must use their multiplication skills to eliminate monster suspects to solve who needs to be arrested for the scare crimes in Mathhattan!

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

  • Clue 1: Multiply Whole Numbers (2-digit, 3-digit and 4-digit numbers mixed)
  • Clue 2: Multiplying Fractions by Fractions
  • Clue 3: Multiplying Decimals by Decimals
  • Clue 4: Multiplication Word Problems (with decimals and whole numbers)
  • Clue 5: Multiplying Mixed Numbers

The pack also includes a mystery declaration sheet, answer sheets, an elimination guide, an editable suspects list, and printable awards.

Multiple Uses

Great for:

  • Review
  • Consolidation
  • Math Centers
  • Extra Practice
  • Enrichment
  • Early Finishers
  • Homework
  • Substitute Teachers

How long will this activity take?

The time to complete will vary anywhere between 30 minutes and 2 hours! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class. I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, move on to the next clue within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "We must learn something new before attempting the next clue." There are lots of ways to implement this activity in your classroom; learn more in the blog post link below:

Other Grade Editions Available

⭐The Case of the Monster Mix-Up is also available in the following grade editions. Check out the skills and select a level that suits your class best.

Differentiation Tip: Clue swap across grade levels to adjust the mystery with skills to suit student needs. As long as the clue number being swapped is the same, the mystery will work the same.
