Description

This interactive, hands-on, and digital EASEL math lesson (there is no printable component) helps students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade visualize fractions OF fractions using pattern blocks and a real world example of a chocolate bar. It is a great introduction to the concept of multiplying fractions for your fraction unit.

How to Use:

Students can drag and drop the pieces on each slide to visualize the relationships between the pattern blocks and fractional parts of a chocolate bar.

  • There are self-checking multiple choice questions throughout to ensure comprehension.
  • There is a drag-and-drop quiz (self-checking) at the end to ensure engagement and understanding.

  1. You could present the lesson to the whole class on an interactive whiteboard. You can give your students pattern blocks so they can follow along in a hands-on way.
  2. Students could complete the lesson in-class if you have one-to-one devices.
  3. OR, this could be a great digital homework assignment.

Grades to Use With:

This EASEL digital math fraction lesson is designed for students in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade who are learning about fraction concepts, specifically multiplying fractions and why "of" means multiply.

It could be used in middle school special education classes where appropriate.

What's Included:

12-Page EASEL Digital Presentation:

  • Title Page
  • 6 pages of interactive moveable pieces for students to explore fraction relationships with pattern blocks and chocolate bars.

Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions, (e.g., 1/2 = 2/4, 4/6 = 2/3). Explain why the fractions are equivalent, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
Explain why a fraction ๐˜ข/๐˜ฃ is equivalent to a fraction (๐˜ฏ ร— ๐˜ข)/(๐˜ฏ ร— ๐˜ฃ) by using visual fraction models, with attention to how the number and size of the parts differ even though the two fractions themselves are the same size. Use this principle to recognize and generate equivalent fractions.
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction or whole number by a fraction.
