Description
This multiplying binomials visual math lesson and worksheet carefully walks students in 8th, 9th, and 10th grades through a comprehensive and visual explanation of multiplying binomials using an area model, before introducing the mnemonic "FOIL" as a strategy for multiplying two binomials.
It uses clear visuals and colour-coding to make the information salient and so that students understand the concept behind the math skill: multiplying binomials.
How to Use:
- Print a 4-page packet for each student. It can be printed in color OR black and white and students will shade the appropriate areas.
- Go through the first three pages as a class. Students complete the blanks and calculations as you teach them about area models, variables, and simplifying by combining like terms.
- Finally, they put it all together and multiply two binomials using the mnemonic FOIL (first, outside, inside, last).
- A sheet of practice problems of increasing difficulty is included. You can ask your students to draw area models for each problem on a separate sheet of paper. They could work alone or in pairs or small groups collaboratively.
- You will be able to use the language, visuals, and methods from this lesson when teaching the reverse operation (factoring trinomials) at a later date.
Grades to Use With:
This multiplying binomials lesson and worksheet is designed for students in 8th, 9th, or 10th grade who are learning about binomials, combing like terms, and area models in algebra.
It could be used in high school special education classes where appropriate.
What's Included: 6-Page PDF: Ready to Print and Use!
- Title Page
- 4 Student Handouts and Worksheets
